 Necessary Classes

In order to file for bankruptcy and complete your case, there are now two classes you must take. First, you must take a Credit Counseling course.  This course must be taken within 180 days of filing your bankruptcy.  If you do not take the course within the 180 days before filing, your case will be dismissed.  The second course you must take can be taken any time after you file your bankruptcy case, but must be taken within 45 days of your 341 Meeting of Creditors. This second course is called a “Debt Management”. Both courses are required in order to obtain your discharge from Bankruptcy Court.

As part of your flat fee for filing bankruptcy through Bankruptcy Law Center, we pay the costs for you to take these courses and we make arrangements for you to do so either by phone or by Internet.  We will give you the information you need to take the credit counseling class as soon as you sign the fee agreement and pay your fee. In order to take the classes online, you must go through the following steps:

TO SIGN UP FOR CREDIT COUNSELING

  1. Log in to BKhelp.org
  2. Click on Online Counseling
  3. Click on Register and begin on the left hand side.
  4. Fill in information
  5. Follow Instructions-if you have speakers, you may listen as you go.

This is the class that must be completed prior to filing your bankruptcy case.  This class is offered in both English and Spanish.  If a husband and wife are filing a joint bankruptcy petition, both may take the class together and each will receive a certificate at the end.   You must call the number on the screen when you are done and then you will receive the certificates.  We will receive the certificates via email.  We will then file them with the court when we file your bankruptcy petition.

TO SIGN UP FOR DEBT MANAGEMENT

  1. Log in to BKhelp.org
  2. Click on Debtor Education Login
  3. It will then ask you for your Bankruptcy Case Number, Date of Birth, Last 4 Digits of Social Security Number and Zip Code.
  4. Fill in the information
  5. Follow Instructions-if you have speakers, you may listen as you go.

If a husband and wife are filing a joint bankruptcy petition, both husband and wife must take the class separately.  At this point, the class is only offered in English.  If you need a translator in order to take the class, please call our office to set an appointment with our staff so they can translate for you.  This class does take longer to complete than the credit counseling class so you may have to do it in more than one day.  As with the first class, you may stop and start if necessary in order to complete the class.  You will again have to call in to the number on the screen after you complete the course in order to receive your certificate of completion.  We will then receive the certificate via email and we will file it with the court.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office.

Credit Reports

We also, as part of our service, offer to pull credit reports for you. We have certain questions we must have you answer as well as giving us certain information in order to verify your identity. We then request your credit reports using this information and we will add the information gathered to the information you give us in order to complete the schedules for your bankruptcy. Remember that not all creditors will show up on the credit reports so it is imperative that you collect all data on creditors you may have or even creditors you are not sure if you still have open accounts with. It is very important that we add all creditors when filing your case. We can amend at a later time, however, there is a fee for any amendments made after the original filing of your case. In order to request your credit reports, you must fill out the following forms and return them to our office.
